Green or Pink Line on Phone Screen: What It Means

If a thin vertical green, pink, or white line has appeared on your phone screen — seemingly out of nowhere — you are not alone. We see this regularly at our Keshavpura shop, and it is especially common on AMOLED phones after a drop, exposure to heat, or even just with age on certain models. Let us explain what is actually happening and what can be done.

Why Does a Vertical Line Appear on the Screen?

AMOLED and OLED displays are made up of millions of tiny individual pixels arranged in columns and rows. Each column of pixels is controlled by a thin circuit line called a gate or data driver line. When this driver line is damaged — by physical impact, heat stress, or a manufacturing defect — the entire column of pixels it controls stops responding correctly. Instead of showing the right colour, those pixels get stuck displaying a fixed colour, almost always green, pink, magenta, or white.

This is why the line is always perfectly vertical and exactly one or a few pixels wide. It is not a software glitch or a touch issue — it is a physical failure in the display panel itself.

Common Causes

Drop or Physical Impact

The most frequent cause. Even if the outer glass did not crack, the impact can stress the AMOLED panel internally, snapping or partially breaking a driver line. Sometimes the line appears immediately after the drop; sometimes it appears hours or days later as the damaged circuit deteriorates further.

Heat Exposure

Leaving your phone in direct sunlight — on a car dashboard or a window ledge during a Kota summer — can heat the display beyond safe limits. Thermal stress can cause the thin driver circuits to crack or delaminate. This is more common on phones without sufficient thermal shielding around the display.

Pressure on the Back of the Phone

Sitting on a phone in a back pocket, placing a heavy object on top of it, or keeping it pressed tightly in a case that puts stress on the frame can cause the flexible AMOLED panel to bend and crack internally. The outer glass may not break at all.

Manufacturing Defect

On some batches of phones — particularly certain Samsung models in recent years — green lines appeared without any physical damage. These were often manufacturing defects in the panel. If your phone developed a line without any drops or heat exposure and is relatively new, this may apply to you.

Can a Green Line Be Fixed Without Replacing the Screen?

No. Once a driver line in an AMOLED panel is damaged, there is no software fix, no hardware adjustment that can restore it. A line that appears will not disappear on its own and will almost certainly grow wider or be joined by more lines over time. The only fix is a display replacement.

Some customers ask whether the line can be fixed at chip level. This is not practical for display driver circuits of this kind — the damage is within the panel itself, not on a repairable board component.

What to Do If You See a Line

  1. Do not press or try to massage the line — this can cause further panel damage
  2. Note when the line appeared and whether there was a recent drop or heat exposure
  3. Take a photo of the line for reference before bringing the phone in
  4. Bring the phone to us for a free check-up — we will confirm the damage and give you a clear price for the display replacement

Frequently asked questions

The line appeared without any drop — can this happen?+
Yes. It can result from heat exposure, internal pressure, or in some cases a manufacturing defect. It can also be a delayed reaction to an earlier impact that stressed the panel without immediately breaking it. Bring it in and we will note the condition.
My phone is showing one green line — will more appear?+
Often yes. Once one driver line fails, the underlying cause (stress, heat damage, or material degradation) tends to affect neighbouring lines over time. The sooner you address it with a replacement, the better.
Will my phone insurance or brand warranty cover a green line?+
Brand warranty typically covers manufacturing defects — if there is no physical damage and the phone is recent, it is worth contacting the brand first. Physical impact damage is usually not covered by standard warranty. Insurance coverage depends on your policy.
Is a green line dangerous to use around?+
The line itself is not dangerous, but if the cause was a significant impact, there may be other internal damage worth checking. The display will continue to function with the line present but the line will likely worsen.
Can you replace just the display glass to fix the line?+
No. The green line is damage within the AMOLED panel layer, not the outer glass. Replacing only the glass would not remove the line. The full display assembly needs to be replaced.
