We see this situation almost every day at our Keshavpura shop. A customer walks in with a phone that has a cracked screen — a spider-web of cracks, sometimes a chunk missing from a corner — but the display still lights up and the touch still works. Their question is always: do I really need to repair this now, or can I wait?
The honest answer depends on the type of crack and how you use your phone. Let us walk you through the real risks so you can make a smart decision.
When a Cracked Screen Is Relatively Safe to Use Short-Term
If the crack is a single thin hairline on one corner, the display shows no discolouration, and the touch is fully working — you probably have a short window to delay the repair without serious consequences. In this case:
- Apply a tempered glass protector immediately to stop the crack spreading and to cover sharp edges.
- Avoid pressure on the cracked area. Even pressing firmly to scroll can worsen a fracture.
- Plan the repair within the next few weeks, not months.
Risks of Using a Cracked Screen Too Long
Many customers in Kota wait too long and end up with a repair that costs significantly more. Here is what can go wrong:
1. The Crack Spreads
Glass under stress will keep fracturing with daily use. A corner crack can become a full-face shatter from a minor bump. What starts as a Rs 1,500 repair can turn into a complete display assembly replacement.
2. Touch Stops Working
The digitizer — the layer beneath the glass that registers your touch — can be damaged by the same impact that cracked the glass, but show symptoms only gradually. Continued flexing of a cracked screen can finish it off. Ghost touches or dead zones start appearing, and at that point you need a full display + digitizer replacement rather than just a glass job.
3. Moisture Gets In
Kota sees heavy monsoon rains and high humidity. Even a small crack is a direct entry point for moisture. Once water gets inside the display sandwich, it can cause display bleed (ink spreading), corrosion on the digitizer connectors, and eventually reach the motherboard. A crack that starts as a cosmetic issue becomes a water-damage problem.
4. The Sharp Edge Can Cut You
Shattered glass edges are genuinely sharp. We have had customers come in with small cuts on their fingertips from daily swiping. This is especially a concern for students who are on their phones for hours during study breaks.
5. Display Ink Spreading
On AMOLED and IPS displays, a hard impact can create a dark ink-bleed patch that starts small and spreads over days. If you notice a dark or rainbow-coloured patch growing from the crack, the display layer is damaged. Do not wait — every day it spreads means a larger replacement.
When You Should Repair Immediately
Do not delay if any of the following are true:
- You can see dark or coloured patches spreading from the crack
- The touch is unresponsive or erratic anywhere on the screen
- Glass is actually missing or flaking off
- The crack is deep and crosses most of the screen
- You work or study using your phone for many hours a day
What We Recommend
Our standard advice at the shop: if the phone is cracked, put a tempered glass on it today to contain the damage, and book a repair within the week rather than the month. The earlier you come in, the more options you have — and the cheaper the fix is likely to be.
We offer a free check-up to tell you exactly which layer is damaged and give you an honest price before you decide anything. Bring it to us in Keshavpura and we will give you a clear answer in a few minutes.
