A suddenly blurry phone camera is one of the most common complaints we hear at our Keshavpura shop. The good news is that a large number of blurry camera cases are caused by something very simple — and the customer can fix it themselves in under a minute. This guide will help you work through the easy fixes first, and explain clearly what signs indicate a hardware problem that needs professional attention.
Start With the Obvious: Clean the Lens
The camera lens on the back of your phone is exposed to your fingers, your pocket, oil, and dust every single day. A fingerprint or smudge directly on the glass is the most common cause of blurry or hazy photos. Wipe the lens gently with a clean, dry microfiber cloth — the kind used for spectacles works perfectly. Do not use the corner of your shirt or a rough cloth, as these can leave fine scratches.
Also check your phone case. Many cases have a cutout around the camera that gradually accumulates lint and dust. This material sits right in front of the lens and causes a hazy fringe on photos. Remove the case and check if the blur disappears — if it does, clean the case cutout carefully.
Check the Camera Glass for Scratches
If cleaning does not help, look closely at the camera glass (the small protective lens cover over the camera module). Fine scratches on this glass scatter light and cause a soft, hazy look in photos — especially noticeable in bright sunlight or when shooting toward a light source. In Kota's summers, phones kept on desks or in bags without a case pick up these scratches quickly.
A scratched camera glass can be replaced separately in most phones — this is an affordable repair that costs far less than a full camera module replacement. We carry glass for most popular models.
Is the Camera Unable to Focus at All?
There is an important distinction between a camera that is blurry due to a dirty lens and one that cannot focus at all. Try these tests:
- Open the camera app and tap on different objects in the frame. Does the camera try to adjust focus (you will see it search briefly) or does it stay locked in a fixed blur?
- Switch between rear cameras if your phone has multiple lenses. Does one camera work clearly while another stays blurry?
- Try a third-party camera app. If the stock app is blurry but another app focuses correctly, the issue may be a software glitch in the default app rather than hardware.
What Causes Permanent Blur or Focus Failure?
If the steps above do not resolve the blur, the problem is likely one of the following hardware issues:
- OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) failure: Many phones use a small motor to stabilise the camera. If this motor is damaged — often after a drop — the lens sits at a fixed angle and cannot focus correctly. You may also hear a faint rattle when you shake the phone.
- Autofocus motor failure: The autofocus mechanism uses a small voice-coil motor. A drop or water ingress can damage this, leaving the camera permanently out of focus.
- Dirt or condensation inside the module: During Kota's monsoon season we see phones where internal condensation has formed behind the camera glass, causing persistent haziness that returns even after the exterior is clean.
- Camera module connector: If the camera is intermittently blurry or cuts in and out, a loose ribbon connector on the motherboard may be the cause.
