iPhone Water Damage Repair: What Is Actually Possible

Water damaged iPhone on repair bench at Prince Mobile Service Centre Kota

Every monsoon season brings a wave of water-damaged iPhones to our Prince Mobile Service Centre in Keshavpura. Whether it was dropped in a bucket, caught in a sudden Kota downpour on the way back from coaching, or splashed at a wedding function, a wet iPhone needs careful and prompt attention. In this article we explain honestly what is possible, what is not, and what we do when you bring a wet iPhone to us.

The Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI)

Every iPhone has a small indicator sticker — the Liquid Contact Indicator, or LCI — inside the SIM tray slot. On a dry phone it is white or silver. If the phone has been exposed to liquid, the LCI turns red or pink. This is the first thing our technicians check when an iPhone comes in with suspected water damage. It is also the first thing Apple's own service centres check — a red LCI means the phone is not eligible for a standard warranty claim.

The LCI only tells us that liquid reached that particular location. Depending on how the phone fell and how much water entered, the actual damage on the board can range from minor corrosion near one or two components to a widespread short across the main board.

What Happens Inside a Wet iPhone

Water itself does not usually destroy electronics immediately — electricity does. The dangerous moment is when a wet phone is powered on or placed on charge. The current causes electrolysis, which accelerates corrosion rapidly. This is why the single most important thing to do with a wet iPhone is to power it off immediately and keep it off until a technician has cleaned and inspected the board.

Even after the phone appears dry, corrosion continues quietly beneath the metal shields on the motherboard. Mineral deposits from tap water, pool water, or sweat act as conductive bridges that cause short circuits days or weeks after the initial incident. We have seen iPhones that worked fine for a week after getting wet and then died suddenly — that is delayed corrosion at work.

Our Water Damage Repair Process

When you bring a wet iPhone to our Keshavpura shop, this is what we do:

  1. We check the LCI and do an external inspection to understand the extent of liquid entry.
  2. We open the device carefully and remove the main board.
  3. We clean the board using isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and appropriate tools to dissolve and lift corrosion from contacts and chips.
  4. We inspect the board under magnification for burnt components, lifted pads, or shorted power rails.
  5. We attempt to power on under controlled conditions to see which functions have been affected.
  6. We advise you on what is working, what is not, and what further chip-level repair (if any) is needed.

Being Honest About Outcomes

We will not promise you a guaranteed recovery — no honest repair shop can. The outcome depends heavily on how quickly the phone was powered off after exposure, what type of liquid it was, and how long before it reached us. Clean, fresh water with a fast power-off and same-day service gives the best odds. Saltwater, pool water, or a phone that was charged while wet are much more challenging.

In our experience, phones brought to us within a few hours of the incident, with no attempt to charge them, have a good chance of being recovered fully or mostly. Phones left to sit for days before being brought in face a harder battle.

Typical Costs

ServiceTypical Cost Range
IPA board cleaning and assessmentRs 800 – Rs 1,500
Charging port replacement post-waterRs 600 – Rs 1,500
Speaker / earpiece replacementRs 500 – Rs 1,200
Board-level component repairRs 1,500 – Rs 5,000+

We charge for the board cleaning and diagnosis even if the phone cannot be fully recovered, because the work is real and the outcome cannot be guaranteed before we look. We will always tell you what we found and what the next steps cost before proceeding further.

What To Do Right Now If Your iPhone Got Wet

Time is the most important factor in water damage recovery. The sooner your iPhone reaches our bench, the more options we have.

Frequently asked questions

My iPhone 15 is IP68 rated. Why did it get water damaged?+
IP68 ratings are tested under controlled lab conditions at the time of manufacture. The water resistance degrades over time, especially after any previous repair that may not have been resealed properly, or after the phone has been dropped. Pool chemicals and soapy water also penetrate IP seals more easily than clean fresh water.
The phone seems to be working after getting wet. Do I still need to bring it in?+
We recommend bringing it in even if it appears fine. Corrosion can develop over days or weeks after exposure and cause a sudden failure later. An early IPA cleaning removes the mineral deposits before they cause damage, which is much cheaper than board repairs later.
Can you recover my photos and contacts from a water-damaged iPhone that will not turn on?+
If the storage chip on the board is intact, there is a good chance we can restore function to the point where the phone boots and you can back up your data. We cannot guarantee data recovery, but we always try the data-safe approach first.
Apple quoted me a very high replacement fee for water damage. Is repair cheaper?+
Board-level repair is usually significantly cheaper than Apple's out-of-warranty replacement fee, especially for older models. Bring it to us for a free assessment and we will give you an honest comparison.
How long does iPhone water damage repair take?+
The initial board clean and assessment typically takes a few hours. If additional component-level repairs are needed after the assessment, we will give you a separate timeline. We will keep you informed throughout.
