We see this scenario regularly at our shop: a customer's phone got wet during Kota's monsoon, seemed to work fine, and was put back in use. Then, three weeks later, the screen starts flickering, the speaker sounds muffled, or the phone simply stops charging. Delayed water damage is real and very common, and knowing the signs can help you act before a small problem becomes an expensive one.
Why Water Damage Is Often Delayed
When water enters a phone, it carries dissolved minerals — calcium, magnesium, and other salts. As the water evaporates, these minerals are left behind as deposits on the motherboard, connectors, and component legs. These deposits are not immediately harmful. But over days and weeks, they begin to oxidise in the presence of small amounts of remaining moisture and the electrical current running through the board. This oxidation is corrosion, and it slowly attacks copper traces, solder joints, and component contacts.
The result is gradual failure. Some components start malfunctioning. Others fail completely. The phone may have seemed fine right after drying but was already carrying the seeds of future problems.
Common Signs of Water Damage That Appears Later
Audio Problems
- Speaker sounds muffled or distorted, even at low volume
- Earpiece volume noticeably reduced during calls
- Microphone stops working or becomes unclear to callers
- A faint gurgling or watery quality to the sound
Speaker grilles collect water easily, and the speaker membrane can be permanently warped by water pressure or mineral deposits. Muffled sound weeks after a water incident is a strong indicator of ongoing damage.
Charging and Battery Issues
- Charging port stops working or only charges at certain angles
- Battery drains noticeably faster than before
- Phone gets unusually warm even during light use
Corrosion on the charging connector or charging IC can cause erratic charging behaviour long after the water incident.
Display and Touch Problems
- Screen develops a foggy or hazy patch inside the display
- Ghost touches — the screen registers presses you are not making
- Display flickering, especially at lower brightness
- Small dark spots or areas of discolouration on the screen
Moisture between the display layers can cause condensation, fogging, and eventual display failure. The display connector on the motherboard is also vulnerable to corrosion.
Camera Problems
- Camera lens appears foggy or has visible condensation inside the module
- Photos look hazy or have white patches
- Camera autofocus behaves erratically
Camera modules are not always well-sealed. Moisture inside the module causes fogging and can damage the lens or sensor.
Network and Connectivity
- SIM card not being detected (if the SIM slot was exposed to water)
- Wi-Fi signal weaker than before
- Bluetooth disconnecting randomly
The Liquid Damage Indicator
Inside most phones, there is a small adhesive sticker called the Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI). It is usually white or silver and turns red or pink on contact with moisture. When we open a phone, this is one of the first things we check. A triggered LDI tells us the internals have been exposed to water — even if the phone is still functioning and even if the customer is not sure when or how the water got in.
What We Look For During Inspection
Our technicians check for corrosion under magnification on the board, particularly around the power circuit, charging IC, and audio components. We look for whitish mineral deposits and oxidised (darkened) copper. These are signs of ongoing corrosion that will worsen over time.
| Sign observed | Likely component affected | Typical repair cost |
|---|---|---|
| Muffled speaker | Speaker membrane or grille | Rs 400 - Rs 900 |
| Fogged camera | Camera module | Rs 800 - Rs 3,000 |
| Charging port failure | Port or charging IC | Rs 300 - Rs 3,500 |
| Display fogging | Display assembly | Rs 1,200 - Rs 6,000 |
| Board corrosion | Motherboard cleaning/repair | Rs 500 - Rs 4,000 |
All costs are approximate and confirmed after a free inspection at our Keshavpura shop.
If you suspect your phone had water exposure — even weeks ago — bring it in for a free look. Catching corrosion early often means a simple cleaning rather than component replacement. The longer it is left, the more components get affected.
Frequently Asked Questions
My phone got wet two weeks ago and was fine. Now the speaker is muffled. Is it water damage?
Very likely, yes. Gradual corrosion affecting the speaker or its connection to the board is a classic pattern. We recommend bringing it in so we can check the board and speaker.
Can a phone show LDI damage without visibly getting wet?
Yes. High humidity, pocket sweat, and steam from a bathroom can trigger an LDI sticker over time. Monsoon conditions in Kota are a common cause of gradual moisture exposure without a single dunking event.
Is it worth repairing a phone with water damage signs?
It depends on what has failed. A single component replacement (speaker, camera) is usually economical. Extensive board corrosion on an older phone may not be worth the cost. We will give you an honest assessment before you commit to any repair.
My screen has a foggy patch. Will it get worse?
Usually, yes. Once moisture is inside the display layers, it tends to spread. The display will need replacement if the fogging is significant.
Can water damage be covered by a manufacturer warranty?
No. Water damage is considered accidental damage and is excluded from standard manufacturer warranties in India. The LDI sticker is specifically there to identify it.
