When you bring a phone to our Keshavpura shop with a charging issue, a dead screen, or any problem that could be water-related, one of the first things our technicians check — even before opening the phone — is the Liquid Damage Indicator, or LDI. This small sticker is something every phone owner should know about.
What Is the Liquid Damage Indicator?
The Liquid Damage Indicator (also called Liquid Contact Indicator, or LCI on some devices) is a small adhesive sticker placed at a strategic location inside every modern smartphone. Its original colour is white or silver. When it comes into contact with water or a water-containing liquid, it turns red or pink — an irreversible change that cannot be reset or reversed.
The sticker is designed to tell manufacturers, service centres, and technicians whether a device has been exposed to moisture — regardless of what the customer reports. It is not a diagnostic tool for the extent of damage; it simply indicates whether moisture exposure occurred at all.
Where Is the LDI Located?
The exact location varies by manufacturer and model:
- iPhones: In the SIM card tray slot — you can often see it without opening the phone by removing the SIM tray and shining a torch into the opening. Apple iPhones also have additional LDIs inside the device.
- Samsung Galaxy: Usually visible near the SIM slot on some models, with additional stickers inside on the board.
- Redmi, Realme, Vivo, Oppo: Typically inside the phone, on or near the battery connector or motherboard. Some models have one visible from the SIM slot.
- OnePlus: Usually internal, near the battery or charging board.
On many modern phones, the LDI is only visible once the back cover is removed — which is part of our standard diagnostic when water damage is suspected.
What a Triggered LDI Means in Practice
A red or pink LDI tells us:
- The phone has been exposed to moisture at some point
- Warranty claims for hardware failures will typically be denied by the manufacturer
- Internal corrosion may be present or developing, even if the phone currently works
It is important to understand that a triggered LDI does not always mean the current problem is caused by water. The moisture exposure may have been minor — high humidity, pocket sweat, or a brief rain splash — and the current hardware failure may be completely unrelated. However, manufacturers use it as a blanket indicator and will decline warranty service if the LDI is triggered.
Can an LDI Be Triggered Without Full Water Immersion?
Yes. The sticker is sensitive enough to react to:
- High humidity over extended periods
- Steam (bathrooms, kitchens)
- Perspiration from a pocket on a hot day
- Light rain splashes on the ports
In Kota's monsoon season, we sometimes see triggered LDI stickers on phones that were never dropped in water — just carried in pockets during heavy humidity. This is worth knowing if you ever need to make a warranty claim.
Can the LDI Be Reset or Replaced?
At authorised service centres and reputable independent shops, no — the sticker is not replaced to deceive warranty claims. We do not do this, and no honest shop should. Some less reputable shops may offer to replace the sticker; this is fraudulent and can have legal consequences. We mention it so you know to avoid it.
LDI and Warranty in India
Under Indian Consumer Protection law, manufacturers can deny warranty claims for water damage. The LDI is their primary evidence. If your phone develops a fault unrelated to water damage, and the LDI is triggered from an earlier humidity event, this can still result in a denied claim. This is a frustration we hear about regularly, particularly from coaching students in Kota who carry phones in bags during the monsoon.
| LDI colour | Meaning | Warranty impact |
|---|---|---|
| White or silver (original) | No moisture exposure detected | Warranty claim likely accepted |
| Pink or red (triggered) | Moisture exposure detected at some point | Warranty claim likely denied |
What We Do After Finding a Triggered LDI
A triggered LDI does not end the conversation — it is a starting point. We proceed to inspect the board itself for visible corrosion and component damage. If moisture exposure was minor and no corrosion is present, we clean the board preventively and reassemble. If corrosion is found, we assess what has been damaged and give you a repair estimate. The LDI tells us to look carefully; what we find on the board tells us what actually needs to be done.
If you suspect your phone has had water exposure — or if a manufacturer or service centre has mentioned your LDI — bring the phone to our Keshavpura shop. We will give you an honest, detailed assessment and explain exactly what we find.
Frequently Asked Questions
My phone has never been in water, but the service centre says my LDI is triggered. How?
High humidity, monsoon conditions, bathroom steam, and pocket sweat can all trigger an LDI without a direct water contact event. It is genuinely possible for the sticker to react without what you would consider a water incident.
Can I check my iPhone's LDI without opening it?
Yes. Remove the SIM tray and shine a torch into the SIM slot. On most iPhones, the LDI is visible at the back of the SIM slot. A white sticker means no triggered damage; a red or pink one means moisture was detected.
Does a triggered LDI mean my phone has definite water damage?
It means moisture was detected, not necessarily that damage has occurred. A minor humidity exposure can trigger the sticker without leaving any lasting harm. A full board inspection tells the real story.
Will repair shops help me even if the LDI is triggered?
Yes — LDI does not affect independent repair. It mainly matters for manufacturer warranty claims. We repair phones regardless of LDI status, and we always tell you what we find.
Does replacing the screen or battery trigger the LDI?
Not directly — a repair itself does not trigger the LDI. However, if a poorly done repair breaks a seal and allows humidity in, a later inspection might find a triggered sticker. This is another reason why repair quality matters.
