No Network After a Repair: IMEI & Baseband

Technician checking network signal and IMEI on phone at Kota repair workshop

Few things are more alarming than picking up your phone after a repair and discovering it has no network signal. If you also see "Invalid IMEI," "Baseband Unknown," or "No SIM" on a SIM that worked fine before, something went wrong during the repair. At our Keshavpura shop, we both fix phones and correct mistakes made elsewhere — here is a plain explanation of what causes this and what can be done.

What Is the Baseband and Why Does It Matter?

Inside every phone is a specialised chip called the baseband processor (or modem chip). This handles all radio communication — 4G/5G data, voice calls, SMS, and SIM card reading. It is separate from the main application processor but sits on the same motherboard.

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15-digit number assigned to your phone. It is stored in the baseband chip's memory and tied to your device. Without a valid IMEI, your phone cannot connect to any mobile network anywhere in the world.

What Causes No Network After a Repair?

There are several ways a repair can accidentally cause network failure:

Incorrect Firmware or Software Flash

If a repair shop flashed firmware for the wrong region, wrong model, or an unofficial build, the baseband software can be incorrectly installed. This is one of the most common causes we see from phones repaired elsewhere. It often shows as "Baseband Version Unknown" in the phone settings.

Static Discharge Damaging the Baseband Chip

Phone motherboards are extremely sensitive to static electricity. Technicians who do not use proper anti-static equipment (ESD wrist straps, anti-static mats) can discharge static into the board during a screen or battery replacement, damaging the baseband chip even though they never touched it directly.

Damaged Network Antenna or Connector

The SIM card reader, network antenna connectors, and associated flex cables are in different parts of the phone. A screen or housing replacement that pulls too hard on a flex cable or fails to reconnect an antenna can kill network function without touching the motherboard at all.

Board Damage from Poor Repair Practice

Applying too much heat near the baseband area during soldering, using the wrong screws that are too long and pierce the board, or pressing too hard with pry tools — all of these can damage baseband components.

What "IMEI Null" or "Invalid IMEI" Means

If your phone shows an IMEI of all zeros (null IMEI), it typically means the baseband chip has lost its stored data or the firmware has been incorrectly written. This is a serious issue — a phone with no IMEI cannot be registered on any network and is effectively useless for calls and data. Rectifying this requires board-level work and, in some cases, specialist equipment to restore the baseband firmware.

Can It Be Fixed?

Often yes, depending on the cause:

The important thing is an accurate diagnosis before any repair attempt. Incorrect repair attempts for this problem can make it worse.

How We Prevent This Problem

At our shop, every technician uses anti-static wrist straps and mats during board work. We only flash official firmware from verified manufacturer sources. All antenna connectors are checked and confirmed before reassembly. If you have had a repair elsewhere and now have network problems, bring the phone to us — we will find the cause and fix it properly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my phone on Wi-Fi while waiting for the network repair?+
Yes. A phone with no mobile network can still connect to Wi-Fi for internet, WhatsApp, and most apps. Calls and SMS will not work over mobile network, but Wi-Fi calling may still function.
Is it illegal to have a phone with an invalid IMEI?+
Using a phone with no valid IMEI on a network is restricted in India and can cause the SIM to be blocked by the operator. Having the IMEI restored through legitimate board repair is the correct solution.
My IMEI is intact but I have no network — is it still a baseband issue?+
Not necessarily. It could be an antenna connector, SIM reader, or even a software network settings issue. Bring it in for a quick diagnosis to identify the exact cause.
The shop that did my repair is saying this is a factory defect — is that possible?+
It is very uncommon for a phone to develop baseband issues spontaneously during a repair for an unrelated part. In nearly all cases we see, it is a repair-related cause. We will diagnose it honestly.
How do I check my IMEI?+
Dial *#06# on any phone — the IMEI is displayed immediately. You can also find it on the original box or in Settings > About Phone.
