A factory reset is one of the most powerful tools for fixing a phone that is stuck on a boot loop, severely lagging, plagued by an unknown app or malware, or simply needs to be wiped before being sold or handed on to someone else. But done carelessly, it can mean permanent data loss or — worse — a phone locked by Google's Factory Reset Protection (FRP) that requires the original Google account to unlock. At our Keshavpura shop, we walk customers through this process daily. Here is how to do it safely.
Before You Reset: The Non-Negotiable Checklist
A factory reset erases every piece of data stored on the phone — photos, videos, contacts, app data, downloaded files, and messages. There is no undo. Everything below must be done before you touch the reset option.
1. Back Up Photos and Videos
Upload your photos to Google Photos (enable Back Up and Sync), or connect the phone to a laptop and copy the DCIM folder manually. Students in Kota often have months of lecture screenshots and notes in their camera roll — losing these mid-semester is a real setback, so take this step seriously.
2. Back Up WhatsApp
In WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup, and tap Back Up Now. Choose Google Drive as the destination. After the reset, you can restore this backup when you log in to WhatsApp again on the same number.
3. Save Your Contacts
If your contacts are synced to your Google account, they will restore automatically after you sign back in. To verify, go to Settings, then Accounts, and confirm your Google account is syncing Contacts. If your contacts are stored on the SIM or phone memory only, export them to a VCF file first via the Contacts app.
4. Note Down Your Google Account Credentials
This is the step most people skip and then deeply regret. After a factory reset, the phone will ask you to sign into the same Google account that was on the device before the reset — this is FRP (Factory Reset Protection). If you do not know your Google password, reset it before wiping the phone. Being locked out of your own device after a reset is a very common and completely avoidable problem.
5. Sign Out of Google Pay and Banking Apps
Sign out of Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and any banking app before resetting. Some of these apps tie themselves to device hardware IDs and may require re-verification after a reset even if you log back in.
How to Factory Reset an Android Phone
- Make sure the phone has at least 60-70% battery charge, or keep it plugged in during the reset.
- Go to Settings.
- Scroll down to General Management or System (the label varies by brand).
- Tap Reset or Reset Options.
- Tap Factory Data Reset (also called Erase All Data on some phones).
- Read the list of what will be deleted — confirm you have backed up everything.
- Tap Reset and confirm with your PIN or password when prompted.
- The phone will restart and begin the erase process, which takes three to ten minutes.
What is FRP Lock and Why It Matters
Google's Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is a security feature. After a reset, the phone requires the same Google account that was previously active to be signed in before it allows normal use. This prevents thieves from resetting and reselling stolen phones. If you forget your Google password and get locked out, recovery can be difficult and time-consuming. We handle a number of FRP-related visits at our Kota shop — almost all of them from people who forgot their credentials before resetting. Avoid this by signing out of your Google account before resetting, or by ensuring you know the password.
Hard Reset via Recovery Mode (When the Phone Won't Boot)
If the phone is stuck in a boot loop or cannot reach Settings, you can access the recovery menu. The exact button combination varies by brand:
- Samsung: Power off, then hold Volume Up + Power until the Samsung logo appears, then release and navigate using volume buttons.
- Xiaomi/Redmi: Power off, then hold Volume Down + Power simultaneously.
- Realme/Oppo: Power off, then hold Volume Down + Power.
Select Wipe Data / Factory Reset using the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to confirm. Note that recovery-mode resets still trigger FRP on the next boot.
After the Reset: What to Expect
The phone boots into a fresh setup wizard. Sign in to your Google account when prompted. Restore WhatsApp from the Google Drive backup when the app asks. Re-download the apps you need from the Play Store. Your contacts will sync back automatically within a few minutes.
When to Let a Technician Do It
If the phone will not boot at all, if you are unsure about the FRP situation, or if you want a technician to back up data from a malfunctioning phone before resetting, bring it to our Keshavpura shop. We handle this routinely — including rescuing data from phones that are too slow or broken to go through the backup process themselves.
| Scenario | Recommended Action |
|---|---|
| Phone slow but boots normally | Back up yourself, reset via Settings |
| Boot loop, cannot open Settings | Recovery mode reset (back up first if possible) |
| FRP account unknown | Visit our shop before resetting |
| Phone completely dead | Visit our shop — back up is needed first |
