After serving customers in Keshavpura, Kota for more than two decades, we have heard many stories from people who were cheated by dishonest repair shops before coming to us. It is not something we enjoy hearing, but it happens — and we believe the best response is to educate our customers so they can protect themselves anywhere they go. Here is what to watch for, and what a trustworthy shop should always offer.
Common Mobile Repair Scams
The Vague Quote That Grows
A dishonest shop gives a very low quote over the phone or at the counter, then once your phone is disassembled, calls you to say the problem is "more serious" and the real cost is two or three times the original number. Since your phone is already open, many customers feel pressured to agree. A legitimate shop gives a specific diagnosis and a firm written or clearly stated quote before opening the phone, and honours it.
Part Swapping
This is one of the most difficult scams to detect. You bring in a phone with a working battery, and the shop secretly replaces it with a worse or older one. Your original — which was in good condition — gets sold or used elsewhere. Common targets are batteries, SIM trays, cameras, and even the screen (replacing your original with a lower-quality copy and keeping yours). The protection against this is to note the condition of every component before handing the phone over, and to watch whether the shop marks parts or lets you observe work.
Unnecessary Repairs
Some shops diagnose additional faults that do not actually exist, or inflate the scope of work, to charge more. For example, a simple software fix is presented as needing motherboard-level repair. If a diagnosis sounds surprisingly serious for a minor problem, always ask for a second opinion.
Fake or Substandard Parts
The technician charges you for an "original" part — display, battery, charging port — but installs a cheap copy. The copy may work initially but fail within weeks. You have no recourse because you cannot see what was installed. This is rampant in unorganised repair markets across India, and coaching students in Kota on tight budgets are particularly targeted.
No Warranty or Receipt
A shop that refuses to give any kind of written acknowledgement of the repair, or offers no warranty at all, is a serious red flag. It means they have no accountability for the work done.
What an Honest Repair Shop Always Does
- Free diagnosis first. Identifies the problem before quoting. Does not charge for looking.
- Clear written or itemised quote. Tells you what part needs replacing and what the cost is before opening the phone.
- Warranty on parts and labour. Stands behind the work. The length of warranty depends on the specific part, but a legitimate shop always offers one.
- Returns your original parts if asked. If we replace a battery or screen, we give you the old part so you can see it was replaced. Ask any shop for this — refusal is a red flag.
- Explains the fault in plain language. You should understand what is wrong and why the fix costs what it does. Vague technical jargon used to avoid questions is a warning sign.
- Does not pressure you. A good shop gives you the diagnosis and quote, and lets you decide. No high-pressure sales tactics.
Questions to Ask Before Handing Over Your Phone
- Do you diagnose for free before quoting?
- Can you give me the quote in writing before you start?
- Do you give a warranty on the repair? How long?
- Can I see the old part after you replace it?
- Are the replacement parts original or compatible? What is the difference in price?
